travel day

A nice bonfire after our travel day.  We did take that alternate route down from Ohiopyle State Park, and it was so much better!  We did however,  encounter warnings on the highway for trucks and RVs to use low gear and a speed of 10 miles an hour, as we headed down the long steep decent.  At least it wasn't narrow, hairpin turns!  They call this the "Pennsylvania Alps"for good reason!  We finally left them behind today, along with my singing of Edelweiss, for which I think Clem was doubly thankful!  So they were little white daisies.....close enough I say!  Since I don't happen to know a song about Ohio, I had to listen to the ipod today as we made our way to Dayton, our home base for two nights.  We had a funny experience with a toll booth when I entered and a machine greeted me not giving me a ticket, but looking for the toll!  For which it took only a special toll card, or dollars, fives, or 10's, of which we had none!  A red light and gate barred our way, and no human in sight!  Clem was scrounging  for $3.60 in quarters when I spotted a button to summon voice help, and pushed it.  I was momentarily startled by a lady appearing  around the giant yellow machine, tall enough to accommodate us tall guys, as well as regular vehicle height.  I pleaded ignorance, and she gave me change for a $10.  Now, the machine is tall, but I still had to half stand to feed the dollar bills into the slot, and then reach my change, of which I dropped a coin.  We drove out laughing at the strange system, and me wondering how much extra they make in dropped coin!

The Ohio landscape soon turned flat, with rows of crops, a stark difference from the Allegheny mountains of Pennsylvania.
I am passing up a chance to see the Longaberger factory, where the building is in the shape of one of their baskets, as well as a Carousel carving company tour, in favor of staying on route and seeing a large attraction tomorrow, and moving on, since we spent so much time in PA.    I have noted both in a special book I have started keeping, so as not to forget for the next trip.   It takes a lot of planning to get to the attractions, plan the route, and find convenient RV parks.

The park tonight is a KOA, with over 600 spots, and yet we had little to choose from, as it is Fireman's and Policeman's weekend.  There are lakes, a pool, hay rides, and tonight a band, instead of the evening movie!  A super family campground, there are adorable little cabins in addition to the RVs , and folks having a great time.   One young woman sitting by a cabin called out to ask if we had "room for her in there" when we pulled in. Another young lady asked about it, saying her husband said he could not drive one of those, but instead drove a C class.  Clem told her SHE  should drive......that I was the driver .....she thought perhaps that might be the solution!  I am sitting outside as the campfire fades, and Clem is inside watching basketball.  I told him he should watch the outside TV and leave the sound off , but he didn't like that idea.

  1. Don't know Ohio songs? What about "Ohio" by Crosby, Stills, and Nash?? The next time you're traveling through a state songless, please alert me. We don't want Clem to miss out on anything. (PS good choice, by the way, to go inside and watch the game - what a game!!!) Good night, happy campers.
