Ohiopyle
A small town, which was once a mining, coal and lumber producing town that drew tourists to see the beautiful falls once the railroads came to town, it is now a recreational town with white water rafting, fishing, zip lining, and snow shoeing and skiing in winter. The word in Indian translates to water that makes white foam, which it certainly does! We passed probably a half dozen resorts on the road on the way to Falling Waters, and came upon this little town by chance. We decided to spend the night at the Ohiopyle State Park campground, and did a bit of exploring. First a trail to Cucumber Falls, then the Ohiopyle falls in town. So much hiking everywhere! I would love to have done some more, but was glad Clem agreed to as much as he did. He is not a hiker, and he "figured we spent enough time on our feet today touring." We watched several kayakers put in, all wearing helmets. That had to tell us something about that sport here!
It was a beautiful evening, and we sat in the park with an ice cream and enjoyed the sound of the falls and the sun getting low, then headed back to our campsite and sat out there as it dropped. There is a group of young people tenting across from us in a huge open area, and they built a fire, which I enjoyed from the distance. I was a bit concerned about how the late evening would go, but they were very quiet as it got VERY dark! The stars were amazing! I thought I caught a glimpse of a few lightening bugs! Waterfalls, hiking in the woods, lightning bugs......as much as I love Florida, these are things I do miss. Of course, all that disappears when the cold comes and the snow flies! Then we head to endless summer and enjoy the ocean breezes!
